Martyrs ofVietnam
Introduction:
An-rê Trần Anh Dũng, A.k.a. Andrew Dung-Lac and 116 Companions, martyrs of Tonkin; martyrs of Indo-China; d. 18th-19th centuries. Canonized 19 June 1988 by Pope John Paul II.
Not long after the Portuguese discovered Vietnam, Christianity was introduced in 1533 by a certain Inigo (Ignatius), seemingly a European religious on his way to China, who remained in Vietnam for 2 years. Other missionaries labored intermittently in this little-frequented region for several decades. The Jesuits opened the first stable mission in 1615 at Da Nang (Annam) with the arrival of the Neopolitan Francesco Buzomi and Portuguese Diego Carvalho. They ministered to Japanese converts who, like themselves, had been driven from Japan by persecution.
Alexander de Rhodes, SJ (1591-1660), the "apostle of Vietnam," arrived in 1624, and in 1627 went to Hà Nội, capital of Tonkin in what is now North Vietnam. His success was extraordinary. The first year he baptized the king's sister and 1,200 adults; in the next 2 years, 5,500. In 1630, he was expelled and the first Christian (unnamed) was beheaded for the faith. Rhodes returned to Vietnam from where he reported 100,000 Vietnamese Catholics in 1639. In 1645, he was banished again, returned to France, and founded the Paris Seminary for Foreign Missions. The influx of new missionaries from the Society for Foreign Missions led to a period of swift growth; in 1658, there were 300,000 Catholics in Tonkin alone. The first seminary opened in 1666, and the first 2 native priests were ordained in 1668. A native religious congregation of women, the Lovers of the Cross (Amantes de la Croix), began in 1670.
Sporadic persecutions occurred up to 1698, when the first severe one erupted. Others followed (notably 1712, 1723, and 1750) during which at least 100,000 Christains, including the first of the canonized (Gil and Lenziniana, 1745), were martyred. A temporary peace took effect when the vicar apostolic arranged a treaty (1787) between France and a pretender to the Vietnamese throne, Nguyễn-Ánh, who was given French military aid to become Emperor Gialong (1806). His Annamite successors (Minh Mang and Tu-Dúc) increased the ferocity of the persecutions in 1820-41. Minh banished all foreign missionaries and required Vietnamese Christians to apostatize by trampling a crucifix underfoot. After abating for a time, in 1847, suppression of Christianity was renewed when the emperor suspected foreign missionaries and Vietnamese Christians of aiding in the rebellion of one of his sons. Christians were marked on their faces with the words tà đạo ("false religion"); husbands were separated from their wives, and children from their parents. During the 19th century, between 100,000 and 300,000 Christians suffered for their faith, including most of those canonized. Catholic resistance, shown notably in hiding priests, was heroic. In the 5 years between 1857 and 1862, it is estimated that more than 5,000 faithful were martyred in addition to 215 native priests and nuns, and about 40,000 Catholics were dispossessed and exiled from their home regions. In 1917 no less than 2,078 causes from this last group were introduced; a representative sample of 25 were beatified in 1951.Although the records of most who suffered have been destroyed, a total of 117—including 96 Vietnamese, 11 Spanish Dominicans, and 10 French members of the Paris Society for Foreign Missions(Missions Etrangères de Paris) (MEP)—were canonized. Among them were 8 bishops, 50 priests (15 Dominicans, 8 members of the Paris Foreign Mission Society, 27 seculars), 1 seminarian, and 58 lay people (9 Dominican tertiaries and 17 catechists) martyred in Tonkin (in what was North Vietnam), Cochin-China (South Vietnam), and Annam (parts in North and South Vietnam). The majority (76) were beheaded but 21 were suffocated, 9 died from their tortures, 6 burnt alive, and 5 mutilated. The names of this representative sample of 117 martyrs follows. These martyrs were beatified on four separate occasions: 64 in 1900 by Pope Leo XIII; 8 in 1906 by Pope Pius X (all Dominicans); 20 in 1909 also by Pius X; and 25 in 1951 by Pope Pius XII.

Lời Mở Ðầu: Thánh An-rê Dũng Lạc, và 116 vị thánh Việt Nam, tử đạo tại Việt Nam trong các thế kỷ 18 và 19, được Ðức Thánh Cha Giaon Phaolô II phong thánh ngày 19 tháng 6, năm 1988.
Ngay sau khi cac nhà truyền giáo Bồ Ðào Nha khám phá ra Việt Nam, đạo Công Giáo được đưa vào Việt Nam bởi một giáo sĩ tên I-nhã năm 1533, có lẽ là một giáo sĩ Âu Tây trên đường đi Trung Hoa, và ghé lại Việt Nam hai năm. Các nhà truyền giáo khác cũng hoạt động vất vả tại miền đất ít người lui tới này trong mấy chục năm. Các linh mục Dòng Tên mở cơ sở truyền giáo đầu tiên năm 1615 tại Ðà Nẵng với cha Francesco Buzomi người Ý và cha Dieogo Carvalho người Bồ. Họ chăm sóc cho các giáo dân người Nhật, cũng như họ, đã bị đuổi ra khỏi nước Nhật vì bị đàn áp.

Ða số bị sử trảm (chặt đầu) (76), nhưng 21 nguờ bị xử giảo (thắt cổ) chết, 9 chết vì bị tra tấn, 6 bị thiêu sống, và 5 bị lăng trì (phân thây). Tên của các vị thánh tử đạo này được liệt kê sau đây. He was first sent to the Philippines upon his profession as a Dominican. Thereafter he was sent to Ximabara under St. Jerome Hermosilla, with whom he was beheaded. Following his profession in the Order of Preachers, he was sent to the Philippines, where he was known as an especially devout member of the order. In 1858, he was consecrated titular bishop of Tonkin and appointed vicar apostolic. Upon his arrival in Vietnam, he faced persecution by the government and worked in extremely difficult conditions. Like his Master, the bishop was betrayed by one of his own who had apostatized. In 1861, he was arrested, degraded, imprisoned, tortured, and beheaded with Bishop Hermosilla and Fr. Almatĩ. For a time St. Valentine's cause was separated from the group because his intercession was credited with several miracles. While awaiting execution, he wrote a letter of farewell to his family. He was beheaded at the age of 28. He was the captain of the Emperor Minh-Mệnh's bodyguard. As a Christian he became attached to the MEP. He was arrested in 1832, degraded, and suffered for months before he was beheaded. Beatified 1900. Feast: Oct. 22.Phaolô Tống Viết Bường, quan thị vệ; sanh tại Phủ Cam, Huế; chết 23 tháng 10, 1833, tại Thợ Ðúc. Ngài là quan cận vệ của Vua Minh-Mệnh. Martyrs ofVietnam

Not long after the Portuguese discovered Vietnam, Christianity was introduced in 1533 by a certain Inigo (Ignatius), seemingly a European religious on his way to China, who remained in Vietnam for 2 years. Other missionaries labored intermittently in this little-frequented region for several decades. The Jesuits opened the first stable mission in 1615 at Da Nang (Annam) with the arrival of the Neopolitan Francesco Buzomi and Portuguese Diego Carvalho. They ministered to Japanese converts who, like themselves, had been driven from Japan by persecution.
Alexander de Rhodes, SJ (1591-1660), the "apostle of Vietnam," arrived in 1624, and in 1627 went to Hà Nội, capital of Tonkin in what is now North Vietnam. His success was extraordinary. The first year he baptized the king's sister and 1,200 adults; in the next 2 years, 5,500. In 1630, he was expelled and the first Christian (unnamed) was beheaded for the faith. Rhodes returned to Vietnam from where he reported 100,000 Vietnamese Catholics in 1639. In 1645, he was banished again, returned to France, and founded the Paris Seminary for Foreign Missions. The influx of new missionaries from the Society for Foreign Missions led to a period of swift growth; in 1658, there were 300,000 Catholics in Tonkin alone. The first seminary opened in 1666, and the first 2 native priests were ordained in 1668. A native religious congregation of women, the Lovers of the Cross (Amantes de la Croix), began in 1670.
Sporadic persecutions occurred up to 1698, when the first severe one erupted. Others followed (notably 1712, 1723, and 1750) during which at least 100,000 Christains, including the first of the canonized (Gil and Lenziniana, 1745), were martyred. A temporary peace took effect when the vicar apostolic arranged a treaty (1787) between France and a pretender to the Vietnamese throne, Nguyễn-Ánh, who was given French military aid to become Emperor Gialong (1806). His Annamite successors (Minh Mang and Tu-Dúc) increased the ferocity of the persecutions in 1820-41. Minh banished all foreign missionaries and required Vietnamese Christians to apostatize by trampling a crucifix underfoot. After abating for a time, in 1847, suppression of Christianity was renewed when the emperor suspected foreign missionaries and Vietnamese Christians of aiding in the rebellion of one of his sons. Christians were marked on their faces with the words tà đạo ("false religion"); husbands were separated from their wives, and children from their parents. During the 19th century, between 100,000 and 300,000 Christians suffered for their faith, including most of those canonized. Catholic resistance, shown notably in hiding priests, was heroic. In the 5 years between 1857 and 1862, it is estimated that more than 5,000 faithful were martyred in addition to 215 native priests and nuns, and about 40,000 Catholics were dispossessed and exiled from their home regions. In 1917 no less than 2,078 causes from this last group were introduced; a representative sample of 25 were beatified in 1951.Although the records of most who suffered have been destroyed, a total of 117—including 96 Vietnamese, 11 Spanish Dominicans, and 10 French members of the Paris Society for Foreign Missions(Missions Etrangères de Paris) (MEP)—were canonized. Among them were 8 bishops, 50 priests (15 Dominicans, 8 members of the Paris Foreign Mission Society, 27 seculars), 1 seminarian, and 58 lay people (9 Dominican tertiaries and 17 catechists) martyred in Tonkin (in what was North Vietnam), Cochin-China (South Vietnam), and Annam (parts in North and South Vietnam). The majority (76) were beheaded but 21 were suffocated, 9 died from their tortures, 6 burnt alive, and 5 mutilated. The names of this representative sample of 117 martyrs follows. These martyrs were beatified on four separate occasions: 64 in 1900 by Pope Leo XIII; 8 in 1906 by Pope Pius X (all Dominicans); 20 in 1909 also by Pius X; and 25 in 1951 by Pope Pius XII.

Lời Mở Ðầu: Thánh An-rê Dũng Lạc, và 116 vị thánh Việt Nam, tử đạo tại Việt Nam trong các thế kỷ 18 và 19, được Ðức Thánh Cha Giaon Phaolô II phong thánh ngày 19 tháng 6, năm 1988.
Ngay sau khi cac nhà truyền giáo Bồ Ðào Nha khám phá ra Việt Nam, đạo Công Giáo được đưa vào Việt Nam bởi một giáo sĩ tên I-nhã năm 1533, có lẽ là một giáo sĩ Âu Tây trên đường đi Trung Hoa, và ghé lại Việt Nam hai năm. Các nhà truyền giáo khác cũng hoạt động vất vả tại miền đất ít người lui tới này trong mấy chục năm. Các linh mục Dòng Tên mở cơ sở truyền giáo đầu tiên năm 1615 tại Ðà Nẵng với cha Francesco Buzomi người Ý và cha Dieogo Carvalho người Bồ. Họ chăm sóc cho các giáo dân người Nhật, cũng như họ, đã bị đuổi ra khỏi nước Nhật vì bị đàn áp.
A Lịch Sơn Ðắc Lộ, dòng Tên (1591-1660), vị "tông đồ của Việt Nam" tới năm 1624, và năm 1627 đi Hà Nội. Ngài thành công lạ thường. He was first sent to the Philippines upon his profession as a Dominican. Thereafter he was sent to Ximabara under St. Jerome Hermosilla, with whom he was beheaded. In 1858, he was consecrated titular bishop of Tonkin and appointed vicar apostolic. Upon his arrival in Vietnam, he faced persecution by the government and worked in extremely difficult conditions. Like his Master, the bishop was betrayed by one of his own who had apostatized. In 1861, he was arrested, degraded, imprisoned, tortured, and beheaded with Bishop Hermosilla and Fr. Almatĩ. For a time St. Valentine's cause was separated from the group because his intercession was credited with several miracles.
