IT CAME UPON THE MIDNIGHT CLEAR
Carol
1_ It came upon the midnight clear , that glorious song of old , from angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold ;: “ Peace on the earth , good will to all from heaven’s all gracious King “ ; The world in solemn stillness lay , to hear the angel sing .
2_ Still through the cloven skies they come , with peaceful wings unfurled , and still their heavenly music floats over all the weary world : Above its sad and lowly plains they bend on hovering wing , and ever over its babel sounds the blessed angels sing.
3_ And ye , beneath life’s crushing load , whose forms are bending low , who toil along the climbing way with painful steps and slow , look now ! for glad and golden hours come swiftly on the wing : O rest beside the weary road and hear the angels sing .
4_ For , lo , the days are hastening on , by prophet bards foretold , when with the evercircling years comes’ round the age of gold ; when peace shall over all the earth its ancient slendors fling , and all the world give back the song which now the angels sing.
AWAY IN A MANGER
Mueller
1_ Away in a manger , no crib for a bed , the little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head ; The stars in the sky looked down where he lay , the little Lord Jesus , asleep on the hay .
2_ The cattle are lowing the baby awakes , but little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes ; I love thee , Lord Jesus ! Look down from the sky , and stay by my cradle till morning is nigh.
3_ Be near me , Lord Jesus , I ask thee to stay close by me forever , and love me , I pray ; Bless all the dear children in thy tender care , and fit us for heaven to live with thee there . |
