ESE SCHOLARSHIP
(2010-2011)


Introduction:
ESE Scholarship Fund has been established by the staff, students, and friends of the English Sharing Experience (ESE) organization to encourage and assist bright, committed, but financially challenged students in Vietnam.

ESE is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization. Our staffs consist of over 40 volunteers who operate an online English class in a Paltalk chat-room. We dedicate to sharing our English skills and experiences with those who are willing to learn. Our volunteers include English-speaking Vietnamese and foreigners from all over the world.

After four years of holding a successful English learning program through Paltalk and eseonline.net, we are encouraged to do more to help potential leaders in our society, thus the inception of the ESE Scholarship Fund.

We believe that every process starts with a small step. We wish to start our first step by creating the ESE Scholarship Fund and offering our helping hands to the society.

Past Activities:
Our first award of $500 USD was given in 2008. Last year, we gave $500 USD each to six (6) full scholarship winners and $250 UDS each to eleven (11) encouragement scholarship winners.

In Vietnam, annual tuition and other educational expenses per student is averaged at $350 USD. Thus, the award of $500 UDS or $250 USD per student is significant.

This year, we have been blessed and have had a successful fund raising year. Our available funding reaches over $12,000 USD. Of which, almost $5,000 USD was contributed by contributors in Vietnam. That is a remarkable amount considering that the 2009 GDP per capital in Vietnam is only $2,900 USD.

We intend to use all available funding every year should there be enough qualified applicants.

Scholarship Selection Criteria, Award, and Essay Topics for applicants:

Eligibility
Has been admitted to or is a full-time student in an accredited university in Vietnam
Demonstrates a financial need for higher education.
Grade Point Average must be 6.5/10 or higher.
Must reside in Vietnam. (Knowledge of English is NOT necessary.)
Required characteristics
Dedication to academic excellence.
Commitment to community service and helping others
Compassion in pursuing the dream
A proven leader
Award:
Two (2) types of awards will be giving out: Full scholarship ($500 USD each) and Encouragement Scholarship ($250 USD each).
Number of awards depends on the number of qualified applicants.

Essay:
In 600 words or less, the applicant will submit an essay to discuss the following topic: What are your goals after graduation? Describe your plans for reaching these goals.

Deadline:
The ESE Scholarship panel must receive the application package by midnight (Vietnam time), September 17, 2010.

Application Process:

Submit the application package via email to ese_scholarship@yahoo.com. The package includes a scanned copy of the following documents:

Required documents:
Completed Application Form
Written Essay
Transcript
Student Identification Card
Optional documents:
Verification of financial need, to be certified by local government.
An Academic Reference Letter
Verification of community services
Semi-finalists will be interviewed and the original documents will be verified by ESE staffs in Vietnam.

Winner Selection Process:
ESE Scholarship Fund panel reviews the applications of qualified applicants and selects finalists.

Rubric Scores to be used in evaluating:
40% : Academic achievement based on transcript.
30% : Financial needs.
15% : Written essay.
10% : Academic reference letter.
05% : Community service.
ESE staffs contact the finalists to verify and validate their applications.
ESE staffs interview the finalists and submit recommendations to the panel.
The panel reviews the recommendations, conducts final interviews, and selects the winners.
The panel intends to announce the awards before the end of January, 2011
